A politics of convenience in Achalpur: Ideology takes a backseat as rivals BJP, AIMIM, and Congress join hands
Maharashtra’s Achalpur Municipal Council has stunned the political landscape with a unique turn of events. The rival political parties, which never tire of branding each other as the biggest threat to democracy on election stages, have joined hands to ensure the unanimous election of the heads of various committees.
Despite dissatisfaction from the senior leadership, this alliance has taken shape. It sends a clear message: in grassroot politics, ideologies pale in comparison to the undeniable importance of the chair. Ground-level leaders have proven that power balances trump political rhetoric.
This development comes just days after the BJP formed similar alliances elsewhere, such as in the Akola local body with Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM, and in Ambernath with the Congress.
In the 41-member body of the Achalpur Municipal Council, the results saw Congress winning 15 seats, while the BJP secured 9 and AIMIM won 3. Independents claimed 10 seats, and the Prahar Jan Shakti Party and NCP won two seats each.
As a result of this mutual understanding, an AIMIM councilor was unanimously elected as the president of the Education and Sports Committee. Following this pattern, a Congress member was entrusted with the presidency of the Water Supply Committee, while a BJP councilor took charge of the Women and Child Welfare Committee. This three-party partnership adds a new dimension to power dynamics at the local level.
However, this ‘situational’ alliance has drawn strong reactions. Local BJP MLA Pravin Tayade expressed his displeasure regarding the understanding. Tayade, representing the Achalpur constituency, told the media that he was not taken into confidence regarding the coalition. He clarified that during the local body polls, his role was restricted, and he was given responsibility for only Ward No. 1.
When questioned about the BJP’s partnership with AIMIM, Tayade clarified his ideological stance. “I am a legislator with a Hindutva ideology, and our party also functions on the principles of Hindutva; therefore, I could never do this,” he stated. However, he added, “Regarding this matter, I will accept whatever decision the party’s senior leaders take.”
It is worth noting that the state has seen similar controversial alliances in the past. In the Akot Municipal Council of Akola district, the BJP had previously allied with AIMIM, but the alliance was revoked following a reprimand from Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis. Similarly, in the Ambernath Municipal Council, an alliance between the BJP and Congress was formed to keep the Shiv Sena out of power. Following this, Congress suspended 12 of its councilors, who later defected and joined the BJP.
